Yuga’s post about Tabbed browsing in IE6 floored me since I thought this feature was exclusive to Mozilla Firefox. It turns out that Safari and Opera also allow multiple tabbed windows in just one open browser application. This results in less clutter for your desktop.

We use Firefox in the office and I think it’s a great alternative especially for its pop-up window blocker. However, I’ve been having problems recently since my browser windows would suddenly close without my knowing it (at least with Internet Explorer you would get a notification when an error occurred) and slow connection speeds.

It turns out that Internet Explorer 7 will support tabbed browsing and RSS, which is great news for those loyal to IE. While waiting for it, though, you can download the latest version of the MSN Toolbar at http://toolbar.msn.com/. Once you’ve downloaded and installed the toolbar, restart IE and you should see the new tabbed-browsing toolbar.

To add a tab, click on the Add Tab button. A new tab will then appear, and you can proceed to load the new tab with the page you want to visit by typing the URL in the address bar.

To close a tab, right-click on a tab and select Close. To close all other tabs except the current one, right-click on a tab and select Close All Other Tabs.

You can learn more about tabbed browsing in IE6 from Wei-Meng Lee in his discussion here.

I read a post from Yuga’s blog that Edsamail’s servers were down so I did my own investigation on what happened to this popular email service provider. I was concerned since I paid for a subscription for their email service and I had yet to backup my emails there. When I checked their site, it would no longer open and their listed phone number was no longer operational as well.

Yuga did his some investigating and checked out their domain registration  and found it was still due on
March 2006. He did a ping and traceroute to their nameservers both from his PC and from 3rd party online sites and got no results. A DNSReport of the domain showed both DNS servers are unreachable.

Since my building was right next to Edsamail’s office in Ortigas, I dropped by Orient Square to inquire about their email service. It turns out that they moved to Makati and the lady at the front desk gave me their new address and phone number.

I called them up and a voice recording confirmed that their servers were down and that their IT team would be installing newly bought hardware sometime from June 22-24. I then talked with thir operator who said that their servers crashed due to hardware problems but they expect the problem to be resolved by tomorrow.

She also said that once the system is up, subscribers will get 10Mb of email storage but given that the price of renewing with them now costs P660/year (up from their original of P365/year), I don’t think I’ll be availing of their service from now on. Besides, I’ve got around 10 emails in Yahoo (translating to 10Gigs of email storage), several 2Gig accounts in Gmail and unlimited access to the Net in the office so it’s really not that necessary.

If you’re not familiar with Edsamail’s service, read on…

Edsamail revolutionized the industry because of its innovative concept. Unlike most free web-based email providers, Edsamail does not require
users to log on to a website to check and send email. Instead, they
merely install the free Edsamail starter kit CD in their PC’s CD-ROM
drive. All you need is a PC with the right specs, modem and telephone. With no ISP (internet service provider)
required, Edsamail quickly became the preferred email service provider of most Filipinos.

The company released up to three free versions of their software but the latest version had to paid for at a rate of one peso daily (P365/year). Their office used to be located at the 7th floor of The Orient Square in Ortigas Center. They moved last November 2004 to this address:

Unit 4 Bldg B Karrivin Plaza #2316 Pasong Tamo Extension, Makati City

Tel. No.  7295551 / 7295735

I consider this blog to be my primary pet project in the blogosphere so I’m taking time now to give it a check-up to assess whether or not my marketing and promotion strategies are successful or not.

I started Gimikera Is In last April 19, 2005 and since then, I have posted one or two entries daily, which brings my total number of posts to around 90. I first discovered the use of Typelists when I browsed through the Help section of Friendster blogs and since then, I’ve been using them to utilize HTML and even Javascript in my sidebar.

Speaking of sidebar, my sidebar is gettting pretty crowded because of all the stuff I want to place there. To date, I am using 13 Typelists, some of them containing more than one entry each. These Typelists include my dynamic Flickr badge, my unique hit counter (powered by Statcounter.com), my Headline Animator (from Feedburner.com), my bookmark section (includes Welcome message and Blogarithm notification system), my Current Mood (powered by Unkymoods.com), my Guestmap (powered by Bravenet), ads from Google AdSense, Search box also from Google, Translate my blog section (powered by AltaVista’s Babel Fish), my banner in the Link Me Up section, buttons of partner sites, and finally, my Advocacies section.

Update: I regularly keep track of my ranking in the Truth Laid Bear ecosystem and I became a Lowly Insect in a few days and then went down to being one of the Crunchy Crustaceans. As of latest check (June 26), Gimikera Is In jumped to being one of the Flappy Birds. Now with 41 unique inbound links to Gimikera Is In, according to The Truth Laid Bear, this blog is now an Adorable Little Rodent (June 27).

I installed my counter only last May 30 and since then, I’ve had 4,344
unique visitors to my site, with 308 of them being returning visitors. I used to average around 100+ visitors daily but I have seen my stats jump to as high as 600 unique hits in a day to as low as 250 per day.

The bulk of my visitors come from the United States, most of them being referred by Blog Explosion and Blog Clicker. I’ve also noticed that my ranking in Yahoo! jumped from the 50th spot to no. 39 and as of the latest count, this blog was in 36th place using the keyword Friendster.com.

Update: I reached the 8th spot in Yahoo! using the keyword Friendster.com and I even took a screenshot of it.

Gimikera Is In has hit the 10,000 mark in terms of page loads last June 29. I’ve had 8,125  unique hits, with 743 of them being returning visitors. These figures are double (!) that of my stats last week.

According to my Friendster/Typepad account, my actual bandwidth usage this month exceeded my bandwidth allotment of  0.25 Gigs per month. Gimikera Is In is using 0.314189 Gigs in a month (125.68%). I guess this is the reason why some of the pictures won’t show up.

I plan to continue promoting my blog in search engines and traffic exchanges. For a complete list, check out my Links section or click here.

I’d also like to announce that I will be removing my Blogarithm notification system and will be replacing it with the service of Bloglet. If you’ve signed up for blog updates using Blogarithm, please take the time to subscribe using Bloglet instead.

Yet another change to this blog would be the inclusion of a shoutbox / tagboard so that even those without Friendster accounts can leave a message or comment. When I do add this feature, I will be moving the advocacies to a separate category so that they are no longer in the sidebar but will be linked in the main text area. I hope you continue supporting these sites as well as Gimikera Is In.

If you have any comments/suggestions for this blog, feel free to leave a comment or sign in my guestbook.

Until next time,

Jocie (a.k.a. Gimikera)
